Sustainable 'Hood: A Justice-Centered Event

On May 11, 2024, Uplift Institute, IGC, San Diego Urban Sustainability Coalition, and San Diego Green Building Council (now part of U.S Green Building Council California) co-hosted the 2nd annual Sustainable 'Hood Education and Career Expo at UCSD's Park and Market.

The event is a uniquely inclusive, justice-centered opportunity to foster connections and celebrate local climate solutions. This year's Sustainable 'Hood was a resounding success, marked by an inspiring panel of experts, diverse exhibitors, and Youth Innovation Award contestants' project presentations.

Green Horizons Panel

Sponsored by San Diego Community Power (SDCP), the panel showcased insights from SDCP staff members on their diverse career paths that led them to their positions in the clean energy industry. Panelists inspired attendees to contemplate the impact they could have by pursuing a career in clean energy. By sharing their experiences and expertise, the SDCP staff sparked a valuable dialogue while offering guidance to those interested in entering this dynamic field. The panel also served as a platform to raise awareness about the significance of clean energy initiatives, urging attendees to explore the diverse career opportunities in sustainability and climate action.

Youth Innovation Award Winners

The Youth Innovation Award highlighted the remarkable contributions of young San Diegans in advancing innovative climate solutions. The award celebrated the creativity and dedication of young people in tackling the most pressing environmental problems.

Congratulations to the winners, Canyon Crest Academy Sustainable Initiatives, whose innovative True Food Waste Extinction (TFWE) project captured the essence of sustainable practices and eco-conscious solutions. They received a $500 award in recognition of their efforts. The TFWE project serves as a testament to the power of youth-led initiatives in driving positive change within communities and symbolizes a beacon of hope for a greener, cleaner, more equitable future.
